Thumbnails opening as URL

On all the product pages, when clicking on the thumbnail, the images are opening up as a URL instead of a pop-up, with no way of exiting the URL back to the original product page. The customer would have to hit “back” to get back to the product page. How can we make the thumbnails pop up on the product page instead of opening as a url
