Since the last WP and NextGen upgrade, I cannot get photos and thumbnails to rotate properly. When I create a new gallery, some of the photos show up upside down or sideways in the gallery editor view. In the past this has not been a problem, as the rotation function worked on both the thumbnail and the photo. Now, using the bulk edit function, I am able to rotate the photos to get the thumbnail oriented correctly, but the actual image remains unchanged. If I use the individual rotation on each image in the gallery view, the image is rotated, but not the thumbnail. I then have new thumbnails generated and it seems to generate them – I can view them with the correct orientation in the thumbnail edit pane, but they still do not show up correctly in the page.

This has made a total mess of my new image galleries. My older ones still work properly but I am not able to generate any new ones without issues. I am getting totally frustrated here….

  • I’m having this issue now too. I see that support is saying to remove tags, but I have no idea what exact word/tag to enter. So far nothing is working and the images are staying sideways…

@benjaminowens Thanks for the response. I hope the fix works. When can we expect a release of the update?

I found a “fix” that is working for me. I am uploading all my images into the media library first. It automatically generates proper thumbnails when uploading. I then create a new gallery in Nextgen and import the images from the media library. No more issues with EXIF rotation data.
I also installed another plugin – WP Media Files. It has an option to import folders from the server, so I can import any of my affected Nextgen Galleries from the gallery folder on the server into the media library. Thumbnails are generated and the rotation is fixed and I don’t have to upload the files a second time. If you chose this option, only import the primary image folder, not the sub folders “cache” and “thumbnails”. This plugin also has an option to generate new thumbnails.

We don’t yet have a release date for the next version but we will be publishing a beta tomorrow.

We have published a new beta on imagely.com with a fix for this problem. New uploaded images should appear correctly, existing images will need to be fixed by going to Manage Gallery, selecting those images, and applying the “Remove EXIF Orientation” bulk action.

The beta version is working for me so far! Thanks!

Thanks for the new beta version. But I don’t know how to download and install a new beta version from imagely.com. Could someone tell me ?

@haskey0104 Click the link above. On that beta page look for the Download Beta button. Click that and save the file to your computer. Then go into the Add New Plugin page in WordPress and upload the file. If you still have the old version active on your site, WordPress will ask if you want to use the new one instead. Say yes and you’re done! ??

Amazing. From initial testing it appears to have resolved the issue when uploading new images/creating new galleries. It also has fixed the galleries in which i uploaded but didnt manually rotate by using the Bulk edit tool to remove EXIF rotation.

The only mistake ive made is for all those galleries i manually rotated the images i will need to go back and either rotate them back again or remove the gallery completely.

I will spend some more time on this and post any further updates as i find them.

But thanks allot to the Dev team for resolving this issue so quickly.

I have also installed the beta version and it seems to be working nicely. I used the bulk edit first to remove the exif data on all photos and then was able to go back in and using the bulk edit, rotate the photos that were still upside down or sideways.
    Thank you for the update!

@benjaminowens – I just uploaded 25 iPhone photos to a new gallery and all images loaded correctly with no orientation issues. Thank you again for the fix.
