Thumbnail instead of featured images in automatic newsletter

Hello,
Is there a way to automatically use wordpress generated thumbnails instead of featured images in automatic newsletter?
There was a similar topic over 1 year ago but I would prefer not to make changes in the website’s code. Unless it’s proven to work.
Please help or advise.
