• When uploading an image in WordPress, there is the option to generate a thumbnail image.

At first glance, this seems to work adding “_01.jpg” to the file name to enable this to be linked in a post or page.

However, when I view the page with this link to the image, the image is the full sized, rather than the thumbnail generated version.

Should there be something else that I need to enable on my server for the thumbnail generation to work correctly?

    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Which version of WP?
Normally there should be an option on the Upload panel to make or not a thumbnail. If you choose to have one, WP will create a thumbnail pic from your image and the file name will be something like
    thumb-yourpic.jpg

Hey there. I’m running WP 1.5.1.3.

On the Upload panel; I browse for the file, enter a description and then choose ‘Small (200px largest side)’ for the Thumbnail option.

When I click on Upload File, I am then given a link to filename_01.jpg. It appears to be ammending the file name but not actually making the image smaller.

    1. Upgrade – it’s more secure.
    2. Could you, please, read again what I replied?
    3. The code generated shows the path to the original image.
    4. Again, after reading what I posted you should know the thumbnail is:
    thumb-filename_01.jpg

    Hi there.

    I will upgrade.

I read your reply. However, my copy of WordPress was not amending the filename to include the ‘thumb_’ prefix nce it had been uploaded and resized.

Hmmm… The only thing I can think of: is the GD library installed and supported by your server?

what i’ve found when I upload a pic and ask for a thumbnail, the link given is always to full picture. ex: newpic.jpg however if I FTP to where I keep my images.. there is also a file called thumb-newpic.jpg.

we just don’t get a true “link” to the thumb but it does create it. I just know its there and stick “thumb-” in front of the said uploaded pic when I want to use it.
