Thumbnail galleries

I am trying to insert a standard 3 column photo gallery into my posts but the thumbnails come out as a media carousel. In the insert media gallery option I choose 3 columns, I am not sure if i am doing something wrong. I have asked the theme developer and not getting a concise answer. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong please! thankyou in advance
