• The settings and image sizes are exactly the same among these event thumbnails. Yet when I choose a handful of the featured images for an event, the thumbnail crops it to a square.

Please see the difference between “100 Things to Do in Mesa Before You Die – Book Signing” and the event beneath it, “Candy Men: The Story of Switzer’s Licorice – Book Signing”.

I’ve tried going under Settings>Media and selecting “Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions (normally thumbnails are proportional)” but that didn’t work either.

    I’m using the Journo theme.

Unchecking the Crop to Exact Dimensions option will cause thumbs to be scaled proportionally and not cropped to square (or whatever dimensions are specified). However, this setting will only apply to newly uploaded images. Existing square cropped thumbs will remain as-is unless they are reuploaded and reassigned to a post. Alternately, use the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin to update the existing images.

How did a few become square in the first place when the rest are not? IDK. If we can make them all proportional from here on out the past doesn’t matter.

Unfortunately, even if I uncheck that box it’s not working properly. The image I’ve uploaded is very obviously am 800×450 rectangle, and when I try to use it as a featured image it crops to a square.

The image used might not be the thumbnail in media settings. Themes and plugins can add their own custom sizes with their own cropping behavior, and utilize such sizes on your pages without any indication or warning.

The size being used is 300px square. To identify the theme or plugin that might have added this size, deactivate all plugins and switch to the Twenty Twenty-one default theme. Check your media size settings and alter any size that’s 300×300 to eliminate possible confusion. Upload a new rectangular image that’s bigger than 300px in either dimension, then check the files WP created via FTP or your host’s file manager. There shouldn’t be any 300×300 image created. Restore your theme, then plugins, one at a time, test uploading after each until a 300×300 image again appears.
