thumbnail circle crop: can it crop tighter?

The images I am using are square with thick black borders. The circle crop leaves a bit of the black border visible around the image and this looks crappy.
Is there any possible way to have the thumbnail be cropped in closer, so my image borders are NOT visible? In other words, the circles would be smaller but the thumbnail image size remains the same.
