Just downloaded WordPress 4.0. Went to upload an image, and was taken aback by the upload of a thousand (or more) of the same image. My Media Library is now turbo-cluttered. I FTP’d over to my uploads and deleted the image, but the ghosts of the uploads remain.

I learned WPML Media caused the issue so I turned it off, but the duplicate images still exist. How can I quickly remove all these blank images caused by the conflict?

I’m sure a database backup by your hoster would include the WPML tables, but if restore didn’t get rid of the duplicate data, that must mean that the duplicates happened before that particular backup was made. It’s not fair to blame this completely on WPML – it was changes in the WP code for 4.0 that conflicted with the older WPML version, and they did fix it as soon as it was discovered.

Did you try the method of deleting the entries by SQL that I described earlier? First, make sure that you have upgraded WPML so that the problem won’t recur, and then go through the steps I described. For me, those three SQL deletes took care of it.

I confirm updating WPML solved the issue for me.
