• Last night someone started spaming my blog with made up urls that are creating thousands of 404 errors. I usually have no less than 4000 pageviews and the evening is not yet over and Google Analytics shows over 9700.

Is there anyway I can find their ISP address and block them?

I am using Twenty-Ten and Thirty-Ten child themes.

My site is glutenfreerecipebox (dot) com.

    Thanks in advance.

Tara, Thanks so much, but I am not having comment spam, I am having someone make up urls and clicking on thousands of them, creating 404 errors (page not found). This results in inaccurate pageviews, time on page, etc.

For anyone interested, I just got off of the phone, second call, with Bluehost. This time a different guy gave me better advice. He told me about 2 great plugins: Wordfence and Bulletproof Security (BPS). BPS blocks IP addresses by recognizing this type of behavior and you can adjust the setting to be more aggressive if you’d like. Over time, BPS will begin to block IP addresses. He said that Wordfense is very aggressive, perhaps too much so. I haven’t researched it yet.

I have to stop this behavior as I cannot possibly prove my stats using Google Analytics to those who wish to partner with me, advertise on my blog, etc. It’s showing average time on page as being under 50 seconds instead of near 3 minutes.

What a crazy world we live in! People have nothing better to do than this?
