Hey, I am having trouble with SKUs. For some reason, it is saying “This SKU is not valid: 010-01470-26 – only letters, numbers, dashes and underscores are allowed and SKUs cannot start with a 0.”

This does not make sense to me being that a few SKUs I have right now on Amazon start with 0. So I’m not sure why this would matter using this plugin.

Also some of the product it is saying this on are not even being posted to Amazon. So I’m not sure why this would matter.

    Hello @karenlg

If you are having no issues starting an SKU with 0 then you can ignore that warning. We do have a setting that can hide those warnings in WP-Lister but I recommend you leave the warning and just ignore it. That way down the road if you do run into any issues we will see that warning and can check if it is causing the issues you are experiencing.

Most users have no problems starting an SKU with “0” but a couple users had issues where Amazon was not processing their listings properly due to their SKUs starting with 0 which is why we added that message in WP-Lister. But if you are not experiencing any issues you can just ignore that message.

    Kind regards,

This seems to be a bit confusing, but we have had mixed reports on whether SKUs can start with a zero or not. Amazon states in its feed templates that SKUs can not start with a zero, but some users are using them without problems where other do experience problems.

I suppose we could add an option not to check for zeroes in WP-Lister’s settings so “solve” this. “Just ignore the warning” doesn’t quite sound like a solid advice to me.

    kind regards,

Maybe Amazon is only trying to protect the sellers from issues when using SKUs starting with zero in Excel. Here are some quotes that would indicate that:

“Never use “0” in the beginning of SKU as the Excel spreadsheet will strip out the 0 and mess everything up.” – from https://services.amazon.in/resources/seller-blog/all-you-need-to-know-about-an-sku.html

“Never start your SKU with a zero – Unless you want to make your life miserable, don’t start your SKU with a 0. Excel and other spreadsheet software will strip out the 0 and mess everything up. Just don’t do it.” – from https://www.sellbrite.com/blog/heres-why-you-should-care-about-using-skus/

So maybe Amazon’s system doesn’t actually have a problem with those SKUs, and they just recommend against using it because other apps do have problems. In that case I would leave the warning message as it is though, it’s a valid recommendation/warning that SKUs better not start with a zero, and if you do it anyway then you’ll do so “on your own risk”.

    kind regards,
    Matt
