This plugin after one of the last updates has a very serious bug.
I don’t update frequently, but I remember in previous versions this plugin used to generate sub-sitemaps by year+month, like this:
    /sitemap-pt-post-2022-04.xml
I didn’t pay attention to the sitemap.xml last 5-6 months and don’t remember when I updated it, but last few months this plugin generated thousands of sub-sitemaps, not even by day, but by hours…
My site has 525,000 posts and this plugin after one of the last updates crushed all my URLs submitted to Google.
The sitemap limit is 50 MB or 50,000 URLs, and this sitemap converted my previous 70 sitemaps (70 months) in almost 52,000 sitemaps.
Besides, the sub-sitemaps URL structure was also changed.
My site gets around 7500 posts monthly, and previously it was only 1 sitemap per month, for example, for Abril 2022:

    /sitemap-pt-post-2022-04.xml

And this is how it generates now:

    /sitemap-pt-post-p1-2023-04.xml
    /sitemap-pt-post-p2-2023-04.xml
    /sitemap-pt-post-p3-2023-04.xml
    /sitemap-pt-post-p4-2023-04.xml
    /sitemap-pt-post-p5-2023-04.xml
    ….
    /sitemap-pt-post-p846-2023-04.xml
    /sitemap-pt-post-p847-2023-04.xml
    /sitemap-pt-post-p848-2023-04.xml

848 sitemaps only for 1 month, for 7500 posts.
One sitemap for each 8-10 posts?
    Are you crazy, guys?

    This sitemap ruined my site.

@mayazir, sorry to hear your disappointment. Search Engine guidelines for sitemaps require a limitation on URLs for sitemaps, that why they are linked together.

You ruined my site because, after the update, your plugin changed all directories. You changed the structure of sitemaps

@mayazir how are you using these sitemaps? You’re saying that the latest version (4.1.13) changes the fille names compared to the previous version (4.1.12)? Can you downgrade?

    (@mayazir)

    Seriously?

    After I lost 200,000 URLs??

You seriously think with just downgrade the version I can recover all URLs and get the same positions in Google???

Yes. Since this the only case of these I’ve seen since the project started more than half a decade ago – yes.

    (@mayazir)

    The only case?

Maybe because no ne came here to tell you? Maybe because not everyone had a site with 500,000 posts?

You seriously dont understand that after you plugin change the URL structure, GSC loses all URLs?

Yes, the only reported case I can find. To be clear, I’m not hostile. In fact, I care and apologize. That’s why I’m responding. If you’re interested, there’s an opportunity to improve here and try to make things better for you. If you’re not, I can understand, but I’m not going to argue or be defensive. We want to get you back where you were, again if interested.

Would you email support so we can set up a call please?

There is no way to fix it.

But you must avoid your plugin changing automatically the sub-sitemap directory structure after the update. It must keep the same structure. Google takes a lot of time to re-update all new-structured URLs of sitemaps.

My other website (relatively small one) also lost traffic, and it had only 1000 posts. But the site with 500,000 lost all good positions in Google and there is no way to get them back, it is a news site and not the site where I only could improve some posts.

GSC removes non-found URLs much more quickly than indexes new-discovered ones.

Ps: Finally, I had no other option and had to downgrade to the old version of your plugin, to avoid losing the rest of the URLs. Changing the sitemap plugin is the worst thing if the site is big and or has traffic.
