This page can’t load google maps correctly

I’ve recently started getting this error on my website on pages where a google map is.

On my website I have a few pages that deal with “Contact”. In other words it’s my contact info for someone wanting to get in touch with me or visit my recording studio.

I’ve had google maps built into this contact section. You can see a map and my location on the map. Because of the nature of my business, no one ever comes to my studio without an appointment, so having this map is a cool feature, but certainly not necessary in any way. In fact a static map would be fine too.

I realize google changed the way it reacts to websites using it’s google map feature and it seems is now wanting to charge websites for this. And it seems like the way I can fix this is by giving google my credit card number for them to bill me and getting an API key.

Although from what I’ve read possibly it only charges when the website gets a certain amount of hits over it’s free quota, I think it’s 2500 requests per day. If that the case then I don’t feel I’d ever get over 2500 hits in a day and would never be billed by google.

I’ve read many things on the internet about this and haven’t really found the kind of advise that’s helpful to my situation. On my website I can hit control shift J – to open java page and see the google error I’m getting. It’s this:

JQMIGRATE: Migrate is installed, version 1.4.1

util.js:224 Google Maps JavaScript API warning: NoApiKeys https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/error-messages#no-api-keys

    ax.j @ util.js:224

I did find a plugin on my website called Responsive Image Maps. This plugin hasn’t had any updates in years and I assume it’s how I get my google map. My WordPress website was setup by someone else and I have done some editing on it, but am not anywhere near an expert, but I can do some editing hopefully to fix this problem.

I hope someone can advise me whether I should just go ahead and give google my billing info, It seems to me, it’s extremely unlikely I’d be charged a fee. Or whether I should just delete the map or put up some static non-interactive map there.

I’d appreciate some advise or guidance with this

  • The maps aren’t coming from the “Responsive Image Maps” plugin. That’s not the same type of ‘map’. It’s coming from your theme, Divi.

You are correct that Google now requires an API key for maps to work, even if you use less than the free tier. If you’re using a theme or plugin for adding the maps then it’s the responsibility of the developer to either include a key, or a way for you do add one. It’s not

Divi is a paid theme, and if you use a commercial theme or plugin and need support, please go to their official support channel. In order to be good stewards of the WordPress community, and encourage innovation and progress, we feel it’s important to direct people to those official locations.

Forum volunteers are also not given access to commercial products, so they would not know why your commercial theme or plugin is not working properly. This is one other reason why volunteers forward you to the commercial product’s vendors. The vendors are responsible for supporting their commercial product.

All that being said, for your theme I did manage to find this: https://www.elegantthemes.com/documentation/divi/map/ It has instructions for adding a Google Maps API key to your theme. I would give that a try first.

Man Jacob, you’re the best. You sure cut through a lot useless info that I’ve been dealing with to get to the real solution. The people that did my website used the Divi theme, so I suppose they paid for it and since I do my own website editing and don’t own Divi, it appears I’m stuck with an old version that doesn’t have the google API key setting mentioned in that article.

Are there any other reasonably simple options for me to retain some kind of map? If not I can just get rid of it. Thanks for your excellent help!

I don’t know a lot about Divim but if there’s an option to place a full-width block of HTML you could just get some embed code from https://www.google.com/maps. There’s some instructions for finding it here: https://support.google.com/maps/answer/144361?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en

I like your solution and tried the instructions and got HTML code. I have some experience with HTML code and have done some editing on my website, nothing complicated, so I think I can do this.

I’m wondering if you know the answer to these questions:

    1) Will google let me do this without charging me?

    2) ON the first link above I can see Midi Magic Studio marked on the map plus some other landmarks like, parks, motels, stores, etc. Yet when I did the code embed, it stripped off all those landmarks and Midi Magic Studio. The map won’t be very useful if it doesn’t have, at minimum, my studio name.

I’m confused by this statement on the embed:

This map is built for you
When you view this map on your site, you’ll see your saved places on the map.
Your site’s visitors won’t see those saved places – they’ll see a map built for them.

Do you think this means my studio name will not be seen by visitors to my website?

Your suggestion worked perfectly on 2 of my pages, but didn’t on the 3rd page. So I’d appreciate any help on why this didn’t work.

I got some embed code and pasted it into my web page for “Contact”. It doesn’t show my location on the map, yet it has a hyper-link at the top left that says “view larger map”. When you click the link it opens a new google map window, which is interactive and shows my location.

So I added this text on my “Contact” page above the map.
To see Midi Magic Studio location and more detail – click below on “view larger map”

So this worked perfectly on both my “Contact” pages. Where it didn’t work is on my main Entry page. https://gprecordingstudio.com

I went into the WordPress admin edit mode, Pages, and chose my Contact page. Where it said Fullwidth map, I clicked on the X to it’s right and it was deleted. I then added the text to the Text Module above. You can see this here

My Entry page is more complicated and deleting the Fullwidth map by clicking on the X to it’s right or the X on the purple rectangle to it’s left produced the same result. It put a Fullwidth menu at the top of this page and also distorted the top image.

I can’t figure out another way to get rid of the map without messing up my Entry page.

Here’s more images of the edit mode of my Entry page

    and here’s above that map

    Any suggestions?
