• Why do I have to pay $90 to use the most popular payment gateway Stripe? Your “free” plugin only comes with 2 payment gateways that no one uses: PayPal and Amazon. Paypal is not a trustworthy gateway for conducting business, nor is it professional. And no one uses Amazon Payments for a gateway. This is a fail. Uninstalled.

  • Hi @wonderingwhere,

Thank you for your feedback! While we are disappointed to hear you’re unhappy with Easy Digital Downloads, we do genuinely appreciate hearing your opinions!

PayPal is actually the most widely used payment gateway in the world and typically represents 50% or more of the transactions processed on eCommerce sites.

Amazon, being one of the most valuable and reliable companies in the world, is also an excellent option for eCommerce stores that many site owners use. It’s the preferred payment method for a large number of customers.

Stripe, while certainly highly desirable, is not in any way required to run an eCommerce site. Easy Digital Downloads does indeed provide every fundamental feature required for digital eCommerce stores. The features, like Stripe, that require an additional payment are all nice-to-haves and not in any way required to operate a store.

The price of Stripe is actually exceptionally cheap if you take into account what you’re receiving in exchange for the $89 price tag: a complete eCommerce system that allows you to run a full business. Depending on the price of the products you’re selling, it could take as few as 1-5 sales through your site to wholly return your minor investment into the Stripe payment gateway.

It’s also important to consider the significant cost that choosing the wrong eCommerce system can have on your store. I am not implying that Easy Digital Downloads would have been the perfect system for you, but in the case that it would have been, choosing a different system simply because it includes Stripe free-of-charge could cost you significantly more than the $89 price tag of our Stripe payment gateway.

I hope you find the system that works great for you!

    Best regards

Absolutely! Their pricing structure is absurd. They have 5 pages of add-ons with each one averaging about $100. Imagine how fast that can add up! We’re used to get a lot of value in WP plugins. Let’s look at how much they charge…

Want to give free downloads? $50
Offer simple MailChimp newsletter subscription? $50
Add reviews? $100 (seriously, how greedy can you get???)
    Offer a discount? $100
    Frontend submissions? $200

    Five pages like this.

I guess their logic is to charge so much that you’re forced to buy the $900 All Access Pass. I’ve worked with A LOT of plugins in my time on WP and this is by far the greediest one I’ve ever come across. WP is built on the idea of allowing new players into the market for minimal investment and this negates the whole WP concept.
