When I ceated a link with ThirstyAffiliates it creates a -2 slug. Why is that and how can I change it?

I am using a affiliate link and with my custom slug which I have never used before. For example:

    I want to get: MyDoamin.com/go/getresponse/
    but I get: MyDoamin.com/go/getresponse-2/

I have tried it with another affiliate link and when I am going to change the slug there it also adds a -2.

Any ideas why this happens and how to change it?

  • No idea if this is related to your situation but whenever this happens to me it’s always for the same reason.

It’s because I have uploaded a file (image) before I have created a page and an affiliate link with the same name.

    Example:
    1) Upload foobar.png
    2) Create a page named foobar (the URL will be /foobar-2)
    3) Create an affiliate link called foobar (the URL will, again, be /xxx/foobar-2)

If I then delete foobar.png I can change the page URL and then the affiliate link to just “foobar” without any issues.

Hence to avoid this issue I have to remember to create the page (or affiliate link) first and upload the file with the same name afterwards.

    Hi guys,

    Thanks for getting in touch!

I have just tested it, and yes I can reproduce what @cvsts experienced. But I don’t need to create a page with the same name. Here’s what I did:

        Upload foobar.png
Create an affiliate link called foobar (the URL will, again, be /xxx/foobar-2)

But it seems this behavior is caused by WordPress, not ThirstyAffiliates. I have tested it without ThirstyAffiliates and I can reproduce the same behavior with the page.

Is this what you experienced too, @schnolli? If it is, then I suggest you get in touch with WordPress support instead.

I hope this makes sense ??

    Thanks,
    Okky

    Hi @schnolli,

@cvsts hit the nail on the head!

The most common reason for this is due to uploading an image file with the same name in the filename prior to creating the affiliate link.

WordPress itself is the one adding the -2 to the slug and its to avoid permalink collisions.

    The solution is to:

    1. Find the file & delete it (making sure it’s out of the trash as well)
    2. Reset the slug on your affiliate link
    3. Upload the image again… the image will then get the -2 on its slug, which in reality doesn’t affect anything because it’s just for the attachment page.

    Hope this helps!

    Cheers,
    Josh
