• Think Up Themes (TUT) have a Page Builder plugin included in their themes. This plugin is a modified version of the original Page Builder by Site Origin (SO).

Since the move to PHP v8 the TUT version of the plugin causes a critical failure of my WordPress site. Simply switching PHP back to v7.4 fixes the problem.

I have contact TUT and they have admitted that the plugin does not work with PHP v8 and whilst they say a fix is coming they have been very vague about exactly when this will be. I have raised several tickets with TUT Support and whilst they originally answered my query, the response was vague and lacking clarity about what is going on.

My original contact with them was a week ago and following an initial reply from them, they are no longer communicating with me.

Site Origin will not help because this is a modified version of their work for which they have no responsibility.

Has anyone else experience the PHP v8 problem with the TUT Page Builder?

Does anyone know of or when a fix will be available?

One solution of course is to delete this modified version and replace with the original Site Origin version – not surprisingly, this is what SO recommend. This will work but will requires most pages to be rebuilt as the blocks in two versions are not the same.

Any help or feedback of experience with this would be appreciated.

  • Hi @jupiter1955!

We are facing the same issue here with the Page Builder from Think Up Themes.
Already in August 2022 we contacted support at Think Up Themes to warn about the issue. PHP 7.4 is tagged as end of life by November 2022.

Our hosting provider; Domeneshop.no, has informed us that we MUST upgrade to PHP 8.2 within 16th January 2023 as they requires that all WordPress sites that they host must run PHP 8.2 at the minimum.

This will effect us hard, as all pages has been created with Think Up Theme pagebuilder and support must fix this ASAP!

This is starting to be extremly critical for us as we do not have any operational website as of 16th January 2023 if Think Up Themes has not released an new version of the pagebuilder that supports PHP 8.x

We have pushed the support many times and we don′t get any answer of when an new version will be released.

Recommend also to put pressure on the marketing / sales team of Think Up Themes at [email protected] as well!

Think Up Themes please fix your nice Pagebuilder plugin ASAP!

Thank you @horgster for your reply. I’m sorry you have the problem – I was beginning to think I was the only one!

Using an offline test site I have removed the TUT Page Builder and replaced it with the Site Origin Page Builder and Widgets Bundle one. Some blocks convert but this leaves lots of “Missing Element” on the page which need to be replace with SO versions. Also any block that has animation needs to have that removed otherwise the block is not visible. It is a messy process replacing them and, if you have lots of sites using the TUT, it’s going to be a real headache for you.

My main concern now is the lack of communication from TUT and, after reading a large number of Trust Pilot Reviews, it would seem I’m not the only one with that problem either. They did initially respond saying a fix would be “available on Monday” – that was two weeks ago now. Since then they ignore all communications.

I’m going to assume the worst and that we will not get a fix anytime soon and plan accordingly. My hosting provider turned off PHP 7.4 on 27th November.

Longer term I will move away from TUT altogether to another theme if the client is in agreement

    Good luck getting a fix.

    Same problem here!

2 months prior to 28 nov 2022 we’ve contacted TUT about the PHP upgrade at our hostingparty conflicting with their plugin. I know 4 other companies have the same issue. Everyone made individual tickets at the tut support site. Everytime there would be an update next week but up till now…11-12-22 there is no sollution.

I have no confidence in TUT anymore and they do not react anymore in support tickets. I get this from the other companies to.

I found out that the pagebuilder from thinkupthemes is the siteorigin one with some additional widgets. Next week I’m trying to use the siteorigin pagebuilder. And will try to work around the tut widgets.

Then switching to a siteorigin theme and pagebuilder. I think it is a way better company….

This is how I fixed my site:

You need to remove the TUT Page builder. Install the Site Origin Page Builder and the Site Origin Widgets Bundle.

When you edit the pages some blocks will say “Missing Widget”. Replace these with the appropriate SO versions.

If you have any widgets which have animation you should also turn this off and set to “none”.

Sadly I don’t think we will ever get a fix from TUT. Actually having done some research I’m not convinced it is a proper WP Theme Development house but just a clever marketing company working out of India. Lots of very bad reviews on Trust Pilot (74% are 1 star) describing the same problems we have. A few (probably fake) reviews saying exactly the opposite and that the service is amazing!

I found a listing in a US Business Directory that claims TUT are located at 1 Infinite Loop, California. That is the address for the headquarters of Apple Corporation.

They are supposedly based in Bristol UK.

    @jupiter1955

Thnx for the help. Will try that.

I’ve been with TUT for over …. 8 years I think. I have had updates of themes and the pagebuilder plugin. Looking back in my files….in 2016 I had pagebuilder version 2.2.3 later 2.4.4 and since 2018 version 2.8.2. And the latest now…2.10.5. So they have provided support in the past. 2Bad it does not work now.

Will switch to the SO pagebuilder. Possibly buy it with a theme of theme and move over all together.

@jupiter1955 how were you able to uninstall the TUT Page Builder? It doesn’t show up in my plugins list. I already installed the SiteOrigin Page Builder and Widgets plugins yet every page I try to edit or create seems to have sections on it that are related to Thinkup Themes. Not sure what I’m missing.

    (@jupiter1955)

I definitely had a plugin called something like “Page Builder for Think Up Themes” and removed it.

Do you have access to your WordPress files? Check the wp-content/Plugins folder and see if the TUT plugin is still there? I believe it is in a folder called “thinkup-panels”.

@jupiter1955 thanks for the quick response. I have three different websites using three different ThinkUp Themes and none of them have a plugin related to a page builder in the installed plugins list. I also checked the wp-content/Plugins folder and there is nothing additional beyond what I see in the installed Plugins list. I’ll keep digging through the directory structure to see if I find anything related to “thinkup-panels”. Any other suggestions?

    Well firstly I’m no expert!!!!

This is what I would try:

    1. Using a staging system or a localhost copy change to another trusted theme such as Twenty Twenty.
    2. Delete the TUT theme completely.
    3. Download the latest version of the TUT theme.
    4. Install and activate it and see if this clears the problem.

If you can’t use a staging system or localhost – TAKE A SECURE BACK UP FIRST!!

@jupiter1955 thanks again for your assistance. I’ll give that a try.

    @jupiter1955

When running PHP 8.x @jupiter1955 , do you get this error message?

Uncaught TypeError: abs(): Argument #1 ($num) must be of type int|float, string given in wp-content/plugins/thinkup-panels/widgets-builder/featured/featured.php:81

According to PHP Support, this can be an bug in PHP 8

    https://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=80624

    Hi @jupiter1955, @novasol @skill

I have today resolved our issue with the ThinkUpThemes Page Builder.
After upgrading to PHP 8.1, we get following error when trying to edit/add pages

Uncaught TypeError: abs(): Argument #1 ($num) must be of type int|float, string given in wp-content/plugins/thinkup-panels/widgets-builder/featured/featured.php:81

So what did I do to resolve this?

    According to PHP 8 changelog:
    https://www.php.net/manual/en/function.abs.php

“num?no longer accepts internal objects which support numeric conversion.”

    I edited line 81 in
    wp-content/plugins/thinkup-panels/widgets-builder/featured/featured.php

    changed this syntax:
    abs($instance[‘attachment_id’])

    NEW CODE
    abs((int)$instance[‘attachment_id’])

I ran through this 4 places in this PHP file.

This must also be changed in following files:
    thinkup-panels/widgets-builder/featured/featured.php
    thinkup-panels/widgets-builder/image/image.php
    grow_pro/lib/widgets-builder/image/image.php

Since I am using the Grow Pro theme from ThinkUpTemes, same must be changed in the image.php.

Now the ThinkUpThemes Page builder works ??

    @horgster

Thank you for these precise solution. Works for me fine as a temporary workaround. ??
I Think TUT is dead. No response and all Websites offline… it is a pity, the themes are good…

    Hi All!

Think Up Themes has released version 2.18.2 of the Page Builder that support PHP8..

You can download it from here:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/s0f5b3q3o5l8eb0/thinkup-panels-v2.18.2.zip?dl=0

If we read the changelog, PHP 8 support was fixed long time ago.
Why the plugin hasn’t been available for upgrade is chocking..

    It works!

    Best Regards
    Horgster
