thickbox doesn't work with jQuery 1.4.4

Thickbox works properly if using the included jQuery library, however if you are using other plugins that require jQuery and the library included with wordpress (v1.4.4) is included, thickbox ceases to work. When using the 1.4.4 library, the link opens the image file.
