• I am unable to make my existing site private. Under settings, privacy, there is only a blurb about creating a privacy policy page. The option to make the site public or private is missing. Ultimately, I would like the site password protected and not discoverable by google.

  • Well, there is no option built in to WordPress to hide your site. The software is for publishing on the internet, not hiding content.
But there are plugins that enforce a login for displaying pages, and Google doesn’t know how to login, so you can use that to keep search engines (and lots of the public) from seeing your pages.

You can displaying your site for logged in users and for everybody else you can show a login & register page .

This can be done by writing a function in your theme functions.php file.

Check this link form wordpress code references.
You can do it by your own or asking your programmer to writing this function.

This video says there is a built in option: it tells you how to make your site private if you want to, but like @sandrawi above says, there seems no way to do it. My site is hacked atm and I’d like to be able to take it down until it’s sorted, so this would be good to be able to do
