[Theme: Virtue] Blog post carousel only showing "Recent" posts

WordPress 3.8 running Virtue 1.7.7 theme.

In Virtue theme, there is an option where you may choose to display a carousel of either “recent” posts or “similar” posts under the blog post.

I have many of my blog posts set to display the “similar post” carousel yet only the same four most recent posts appear. How can I make the “Similar” posts show up instead?
