Theme upgrade removes widget data

    I have a custom theme based on Response theme. In this custom theme I have added many widgets and use on my site.

    I see when I make changes in the theme and copy the updated theme with same name into WordPress it removes all widget data and put them in inactive widgets.

    This is very confusing and embarrassing as I have to configure it every time. How could I make this upgrade process not do this?

    When upgrading a theme, make sure it doesn’t rename id of the existing widget(s) to save yourself from this issue.
