Theme Update Alerts

Hello,

If I set my theme as child and make all changes in it then I should be active it to show customization for website. Then what will be the role of parent theme? As it will be not customized and it will only update when an update is available. So I should be active only child theme? And at back end parent theme will work but not be active!
