[Theme: Twenty Fourteen] Home Page Help

I would like to expand my header to fit the full width of the page. I was given a code to use but only would work with a style file which I have not downloaded. Can I fix this without having to add that?

I would also like to make my homepage read in 2 columns. I had read a how-to code for that as well but I was always unsuccessful.

Help please? Much appreciated.
