No matter which theme I try to activate the theme templates do not load onto the page list. I am now trying to build a page through copying the template. But the page loads differently (I assume blocks are not located in the right area when I do this).

Do you mean you need to access templates like about, contact, projects?
Templates work differently than pages, please check this article about template :
