[Theme: Magazine Basic] How to display a few posts on homepage?

I have just installed this theme and have been trying to figure out how to activate the multi-post view as shown on the theme sample page?

I would like a content block for each category to be displayed on the homepage: the category name and a short excerpt from specified articles, like is shown on the sample page of this theme. It would be great if each category was in a box.

The option ‘single- 2 columns -3 columns’ is selected in the Appearance menu, but I can’t find anywhere to activate it or customize the posts that will be shown on the homepage.

I’ve searched the theme options and support forum and can’t find a solution. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
