After editing my theme in a staging site, I tried exporting the theme, which uses the theme editor, back to the live/main site (editor -> three dots menu on the upper right corner -> export, then back to the live site, themes -> add new theme -> upload).

However, uploading the theme the regular way didn’t actually update it, and none of the changes, for instance in templates/template parts, are showing.

When trying to copy/paste template parts, they are also not pasting either.

What is going on and is there any fix for this?

Hey there! I’ve run into a similar issue before, and it sounds like the problem might be related to how WordPress handles block theme changes in the Site Editor. When you export a theme from the editor (via the three-dot menu), it bundles the theme files, but any customizations saved in the database—like edited templates or template parts—might not fully carry over if they’re not properly synced to the theme files. Uploading it the regular way might just overwrite the live site’s theme without pulling in those database-stored edits.

For a fix, try this: on your staging site, ensure all changes are saved in the Site Editor, then export again. Before uploading to the live site, back up your live site’s database and theme files. After uploading, go to Appearance > Editor on the live site and check if the templates/template parts need a manual reset or re-import. If copy/pasting template parts isn’t working, it could be a clipboard or editor glitch—try re-creating them manually in the live site’s editor or use a plugin like “Design Import/Export” to transfer the customizations more reliably.
