Theme File Editor Can’t Communicate To Site

    Hi Team,

    While trying to edit a child theme file, I get and error message that says

    Unable to communicate back with site to check for fatal errors, so the PHP change was reverted. You will need to upload your PHP file change by some other means, such as by using SFTP.

    This happened lately.

    Is this due to new update?

    Sorry, it is due to the file permission issue. Write permission was not allowed to group or others. After setting the permission, it worked fine.

    But I am wondering why file permissions changed out of nowhere.

    Could be a security plugin (if any), or upstream server security tool or something else. Unfortunately, no one here can give a definitive answer to this.

    Hi @gappiah,

    As far as I can recall, I upgraded the ubuntu from 22.04 to 24.04. That is only thing I did on the system. Must have done some changes (not sure). I wasn’t expecting that either.

    Anyway that was a quick find and its solved now.
