the_excerpt not working as it should

Even though my template files are using the_excerpt function, and custom excerpts have been written, the pages still display the auto-generated excerpt.

Any ideas?

(I’m really looking for a way to have the custom excerpt show on the search results, so if I’m missing something, please enlighten me!)
