The widget version is easy, effective and free

I recommend watching the tutorial first. Instead, I created a map using the dashboard and then tried to insert it as a shortcode in a sidebar widget. Much easier to just used the included Google Maps Widget to start with if you plan to use as a widget vs. embedding in a document.
