The uploaded file could not be moved to wp-content/uploads.

  • Hi,

    I have uploaded wordpress today and seem to be having a problem installing plugins, themes or even just uploading media. The error coming up is…

    The uploaded file could not be moved to wp-content/uploads.

    I looked around to find a fix and found some people suggesting to change the permissions on the folder to 777 which I tried but still no change. I added an uploads folder in the wp-content folder as there wasn’t one there, but this changed nothing either.

    I am quite new to wordpress but have 2 sites running fine but this is the first one I have come across a problem with.

    Any sugestions?

  • The uploads directory is broken down into years, and then further into months.

    So, for today, if you upload something; it should appear in wp-content/uploads/2014/02/myFile.png.

    But, WP should be creating these folders automatically. Did you go in and modify the wp-content folder in any way?

    Are you using a plugin which modifies the uploads folder?

    Thanks for the reply.

    Once I had uploaded WP i went straight to download and install a plugin so I could have a holding page for my site. When I went to find the plugin it wouldn’t even search for the plugin, just kept returning with error. So I downloaded the plugin I wanted and then tried to upload the zipped file and then I got he error mentioned above.

    After that I have gone to my wp-content folder to have a look at the permisions and changed that to 777 as people mentioned, still had not luck and there was no uploads folder in there so i have added the folder but i have not changed anything else in that folder.

    So I haven’t added any plugins or anything at all to the site other than what is in the initial folders when installed.

    I am also having this issue. I upgraded to version 3.8.1 and now I can’t upload images. I get the error “The uploaded file could not be moved to wp-content/uploads/2014/2”. I tried unchecking “organize media into folders by month and date” but it didn’t work. I also changed uploads (and all folders underneath) permissions to 777 but it didn’t work (and seems unwise). I’ve seen this issue pop up in the forums over and over again but I’ve never seen a decent fix. Can anyone help? Thanks.

    Hi, I were looking for help on this topic for a while. Try every permission combination possible without success. Finally I got the solution working with host provider support guys, so I hope could help someone else too.
    In my case, as I said, the solution came from host provider, they basically did this:

    – Disable PHP Safe Mode.
    – PHP open_basedir restriction set to disable.

    After that I reinstalled WordPress and could upload new themes, files, install plugins and make configuration changes properly.

    Sometime it could be due to Disk Space run out of quota. So check it in cpanel or whatever applicable if you have got a limited disk space. Or check with your hosting company. It fixed for me after deleting some old backups and log files.
