    wordfence fails to update from version 7.6.1 to version 7.7.1 due to inconsistent file permissions. The error message is “The update cannot be installed because some files could not be copied. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions. images/2fa-whole.svg”. I have checked the permissions 2fa-whole.svg which exists in cPanel file system WP-content/plugins/wordfence/images. The permission is set to 0000 and all other images are 644. I dont seem to be able to change it. Is this the problem. I am not experienced with database issues.

    Hi @patjudge274, thanks for your message.

    You should be able to change folder and file permissions through FTP or your hosting provider’s control panel/file manager. Often this might be a right-click option on the files/folders themselves (even in the browser) if it’s not immediately apparent how to do it.

    I’ve seen information that WordPress tend to recommend your WordPress site folder and all contained folders/files are set to 755 which may fix your problem. It does sound like the possible source of the problem if the file you mention is 0000. If you’re still unsure how to find the option after taking another look, I’m sure your host will be able to assist you, especially if you’re not comfortable in making filesystem changes.

    Once these changes have been made, let me know if the problem persists. Sometimes you can see whether Wordfence or other WordPress operations are going to have problems by looking at Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics > Filesystem to see if everything is reporting “OK”.

    Thanks Peter,
    I contacted the host provider and changed the permissions. I have it working again and wordfence updated successfully. The issue is now resolved.
