Can you clarify what kind of field config you are using for that field? Is this a Relationship field and if so what kind of options do you have set in the Relationship Options?

Here’s what it normally looks like for me with a relationship field: https://share.skc.dev/4guWpxkZ

It becomes even more puzzling when a subcategory is selected; it appears as expected. However, as illustrated in the image, ‘Doelstelling 2’ and ‘Doelstelling 3,’ which are also subcategories, are erroneously displayed as main categories.

Oh that’s the taxonomy box added by WordPress in the Classic Editor. If you select the parent and any child, it only shows that at the top.

Here’s an example of mine before selecting any: https://share.skc.dev/xQuQ8n9Z

Here’s an example after I selected just the parent “Test 3” and the “Test 4” child: https://share.skc.dev/nOuJylYe

Unfortunately that’s just how WordPress core handles the selections. All other children end up showing at the top-level and it’s confusing to me as well.

That’s outside of Pods but the good news is that the Block Editor has already addressed this issue in the new logic that renders those checkboxes: https://share.skc.dev/NQuBGJdA

There’s no workaround that I know of for this personally in the Classic Editor.

Then this is the moment to start the Gutenberg editor :).
