To help get to the bottom of this we’re going to need a few more details.

– Are these orders being changed from completed to cancel or vice-versa?
– Are you managing your stock? and there are items in stock?
– The Hold Stock timeout (WooCommerce > Settings > Product > Inventory > Hold Stock) is applied to orders in the Pending status. When this limit is reached, the pending orders will be canceled.

Could you please share a copy of your site’s System Status? You can find it via WooCommerce > Status. Select “Get system report” and then “Copy for support”.?

Usually, this is caused by some conflict, a plugin, or either a theme.

What you can do is isolate your entire environment, to see when this problem happens.

– Change your theme to a default theme like Storefront;
– Disable all plugins except WooCommerce;
– Also add a value in your Hold stock option, it can be the default of 60;

Under those conditions, place a test order. If the problem doesn’t happen, then it is caused by a conflict.

The next step would be to re-enable plugins one by one and make a test order each time until you find the piece of software responsible for this behavior.

Is it possible to disable the automatic change of order statuses?

* Disabling the status change automatically is not default behavior, but you can for example set up statuses according to your needs as explained here.

* Did the conflict test solve the issue? Please let us know. There could be something interfering with the normal workflow.

Unfortunately all plugins disabled except Woocommerce, default theme enabled and no result.
However, I have a lot of such errors in the logs:

This could definitely be a contributing factor to the issues you’re having so it would be a good idea to resolve that problem.

You mentioned that with all plugins except WooCommerce disabled and a default theme installed that you got no result. Does that mean you placed test orders while the site was under those conditions are you were still seeing the order statuses change unexpectedly?

Yes. I turned off all plugins, turned on the default theme, placed an order and the problem persisted. My order itself changed its status to completed, and then to canceled.
However, I found a problem.
The problem was the configured API connection with an external order processing system (BaseLinker). The API key was configured to “write” and “read”. I have replaced it with “reading only”.
