• I get the above error message every time I try to access my dashboard: The site is experiencing technical difficulties. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions.

After a few hours, I finally received this email with the error message.

An error of type E_COMPILE_ERROR was caused in line 14 of the file /home/kinzokuc/public_html/wp-content/themes/dessau/framework/qodef-framework.php. Error message: require_once(): Failed opening required ‘/home/kinzokuc/public_html/wp-content/themes/dessau/framework/lib/icons-pack/icons-pack.php’ (include_path=’.:/opt/alt/php73/usr/share/pear’)

I don’t know how to fix this. I tried to research it but it’s above my head. Any ideas?

You’ll need to access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on these), navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename /dessau/ to /dessau-broken/

This will disable the theme causing the problem and force one of the default themes to activate.

Next, I recommend reporting the problem to the theme’s support at https://helpcenter.qodeinteractive.com

I did that and still get this error when trying to access my dashboard: “The site is experiencing technical difficulties. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions.”

Ok, try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

I already renamed the plugins folder to plugins.hold and I still got the same error and couldn’t access the dashboard.

That really doesn’t make any sense, if you’ve renamed the theme’s directory, it shouldn’t be reporting an error with a file under the theme’s directory with the old directory name, because that directory no longer exists.

Please make sure that you have _both_ renamed the /wp-content/plugins/ directory and the /wp-content/themes/dessau/ directory (not the /wp-content/themes/ directory itself).

If that still doesn’t make any difference, and the same exact error is displayed (there has been no change), try clearing your browser’s cache: https://www.refreshyourcache.com

If that continues to make no difference, are you using any sort of caching plugin, or do you see a “Clear/Purge Cache” button in your Dashboard or admin bar? If so, would you please try clearing the cache?

Note: You do not need to install a caching plugin at this point just to clear a cache you don’t have. If you don’t have a caching plugin or a way to clear a server-level cache, just say so.

Yes, it was the plugins and the dessau files I renamed.

I appreciate your detailed reply. I do have a cache plugin but I don’t have access to the dashboard or admin bar because I can’t get to the login screen. I cleared the browser cache and still no luck. I guess I’m just going to have to reinstall everything. There seem to be no other options.

Ok, try downloading WordPress again, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on these), and delete then replace your copies of everything on the server except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings.

Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.
