The message is produced after activating the plugin. You’re told to log in to Google, and when you try to do that, you’re given this message.

I just tried it with an incognito window in Chrome and got the same message.

I am now using the GA Google Analytics plugin instead of the Site Kit, and it appears to not have the same problem.

I’ve tried quite a few methods to get around this problem and nothing has helped, so I’ve moved on. Best wishes at solving the problem.

Perhaps the authors of the plugin can contribute to the issue’s resolution.

    Hi @dcr20854,

Many thanks for reaching out and sharing details of the troubleshooting efforts you’ve undertaken. So we can determine more on this please share the following:

    1. Your Site Health information. You can use this form to share privately if preferred.
    2. Do you see any browser console errors on the page with this error?
    3. Do you see any warnings or errors when checking your Site Health status (Tools > Site Health > Status), which differs from your Site Health information requested above? Such errors may include REST endpoint references.

One we have the above we can propose some troubleshooting steps. This may include ruling out any third party plugin conflicts, via a setup attempt using the Health Check and Troubleshooting plugin.

No problems with site health. No browser console errors. No warnings on site health.

I have tried setup using troubleshooting mode. And icognito window. No dice.

Thanks for performing these checks. So I can check this with the team can you share your Site Health information as requested above. This way we can check your environment and see what may be occurring.

Please include your current hosting provider where requested in this form. One possibility is something at host level may be blocking outgoing HTTP connections.

If you have any other sites on the same hosting platform it may also be useful to perform a check from another site.

Once I have the above information I will perform some checks and also discuss this with the team.

Hi, I’m not sure if I need to start a new thread but I am having the exact same problem as Dave, on this website: https://casavinosargentinos.ch. This website was rebuilt using Divi and Site Kit was reinstalled. Now, I cannot connect the plugin to the google account and am getting the same error message as he is: “The request to the authentication proxy has failed”. The site health is perfect. Thanks for any help with this issue.

    Hi @textweaver,

Thanks for reporting, and sorry to hear you’re running into issues setting up the plugin. As per WordPress support forum guidelines please do open an individual support topic and we can communicate from there and investigate this further for you.

When sharing you may wish to include a screen recording of your experience while keeping your browser console log open, so we can check for any possible blocks. Using a service such as Loom or Record it this makes it easy for us to view what’s occurring on your site. You can share this screen recording using our user submission form if you prefer to share privately.

I’ll keep an eye out for your support topic and respond from there. Thank you!

@najmehnazare If you’d like to open an individual support topic we’d be happy to assist. Note that based on your domain name it’s possible that you may be located in, or your website may be hosted in a region where Google services as blocked. If so unfortunately you won’t be able to complete Site Kit set up successfully.

Thank you for your guidance on how to define my site inside https://ads.google.com/?

Our site also has a .com domain
