• Since ‘we’ are not allowed to post anything about the Google/Link thingy – please point me to an URL, forum or whatever where I can participate in this.

This is a VERY bad way to handle this. VERY bad.

Reminds too much of old politb??ro tactics. I also find the whole ‘Matt is out of the country’ story a lame excuse. I guess we here in Europe have no internet, no internet cafes and don’t allow strangers to use our PCs?

No press release. No statement on the dev blog. No word on the homepage. Threads like this one get deleted/closed (talking to you podz).

If you want to form a community and make it grow – then let is also share the tough stuff. If there is a problem – you get flamed one way or the other. BUT DO STAND UP TO IT.

As bloggers we all know that you can’t contain such a thing – it spreads like fire (and you even developed the software for it). So let’s be real bloggers, bitch, rant, flame and blame it out.

Earn your respects by being open about it – not by stonewalling.

    Thanks.

  • Google looks like it HAS banned wordpress. PageRank 0 on the toolbar, and when you search for wordpress you don’t get the homepage. And when you search for www.remarpro.com you get “Sorry, no information is available for the URL www.remarpro.com”.

BTW, for those linking to wordpress, be aware of this google webmaster guideline :

In particular, avoid links to web spammers or “bad neighborhoods” on the web as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links.

Alro, honestly, I meant every word of that reply post. But, if you were joking (I know, text conversation sucks for that), then I didn’t mean to direct it towards you. The post has been edited to be more … general.

Yes, it is an unfortunate incident.

@orangeguru: <i>it is a place we can sit down and observes the drama unfold and try to understand what is going on.</i>

IMHO, really, we cant do much except to wait for an official post from Matt to explain. We won’t have a complete picture until then. Speculation and guess is evil.

I would like to ask everyone to just calm down and wait for an explanation. Think of the hours you spend to learn how to use WP, posting with it and powering your website with it. Ditching WP at this point means all the previous effort will go down the drain. All this because of the Google page rank saga?

I feel it is not worth it.

    @mtdewvirus:

Anyone else notice that all the flamers are people that don’t help out in the forums, fix bugs, release code, or do other things around WP?

    Thank you so much.

If you ‘work’ for a free software project – please don’t complain about people who freely take free for free. Any voluntary work will always be ‘abused’ by people – especially when you tell them to do so.

Some people’s angry reaction is a result of disappointment – and because they are attached (read LOVE) WordPress. As any PR person would tell you people who care about your product is a good thing.

Without it’s passionate support base Apple would have never survived.

But let’s look back at the already mentioned other case of bad press, when SixApart did a bad job communicating it’s new price structure (Anil Dash where are you?!). Many MT lovers turned away in disappointment – and came to WP.

This thread has the in same strange way the function of a relationship counseling.

Another note: projects like WP grow one day out of a pure coding and design. Once you get popular you are also confronted with social and public relations issues. A good community is not just a forum that answers technical questions or adds same hacks or CSS fixes. It also helps people to bond emotionally and attach to their blogging software. Since blogging is such a personal people want to ‘feel’ good about their free software.

Anyone else notice that all the flamers are people that don’t help out in the forums, fix bugs, release code, or do other things around WP? Most of the people doing the flaming have never give any of their time back to WP…

heh, I have to agree with MtDewVirus on that one.

@danielck: My inital posting was about not having a space to talk and no informations available. Thanks to podz tolerance we finally have a space … or call it waiting room … to wait for the Hero of Code Poetry and Links for a sort off official/personal answer.

IMHO it’s good to do some talking about this as well, since it’s on many peoples mind anyway. Better spell it out here, then somewhere elso on the net. www.remarpro.com should be able to face it’s own little sandstorm. Right?

@lawtai: I find this a bit strange. Maybe there should be a warning before the download: “You can use this free blogging software if you don’t intend to contribute either code or money to it.”

Everyone who uses WP benefits the project, because they promote it and add to the user base. In a cynical way they helped raising the page ranking of this URL and helped therefore making some money.

As a volunteer to any project you should only ‘give’ if you can cope with people ‘taking’ your stuff.

Even a lame flammer here loves WP.

::confused:: No offense, but I’m just wondering where that 18-wheeler came from.

link mine. scrolly, scrolly to last post…

    @orangeguru: I agree

There is a chinese saying: “Trees that are tall will be more easily affected by strong wind”

WordPress is now very popular. Problems are unavoidable. Let’s stick together for all this to pass.

    @to Those Who Flamed:

I am quoting another chinese saying:
“We must always think of the source of the spring when we are enjoying its cool water.”

If Matt has bad intensions from start, WP would not have survived for so long.

I just don’t see why people are getting all mad at WP…

WP didn’t do anything wrong. It’s a piece of software and you either like how it works for you or you don’t.

Now, those responsible for the links/pages are another story. We don’t have that story, so we’re just wasting our time until we do have a story.

When those of us in the US don’t agree with what the president does, do we move to Canada? Hell no! After all, it’s our counrty that we love, not our president.

FYI, I love WP, these forums rock, I have gotten EXCELLENT support and found answers to EVERY question I’ve had. I’ll not post in this thread again, I don’t want to add further to the noise.

This is perhapse the lowest of the lows for these forums. Just goes to show how ignorance breeds stupidity.

Are you sure you understand the mechanics involved?
Your WP site/content was used to promote other sites.
Your time effort and money was harvested and used by people unconnected to you, without your knowledge or permission.
The bandwidth you pay for was used for other people’s gain. They got it for free, from you….they reached into your pocket while you weren’t looking. How does that feel?

    – kmtcn

Aparently YOU don’t under stand the mechanics. WordPress the blgo software DOES NOT HAVE THESE LINKS IN THEM. I’ve done some spellunking through the blogs. It’s turned into a massive game of telephone. Someon said something reapeated by another and another and another and another, and before you know it, the world is up in arms. It is the HOME PAGE of THIS site that has those links. Devious? Sure. Ethical? That’s questionable. Do I agree with it? Not necessarily. But let’s not go off the deep end — nevermind, I forgot, it’s too late for that. There is nothing wrong with the software, only the main page of this site.

As a once-happy WordPress user, I’m actively and seriously looking for alternatives. Unless something big happens soon, I’m gone.

    – awh
Why? There’s nothing wrong with the software. Maybe some bad judgment on Matt’s part, but then only HE can say what really happened.

Now, for all you jackasses that are lambasting Matt simply because he hasn’t responed: frack you. When I travle, I don’t necessarily take all my crap with me. I’m not sure if he’s on vacation or on bisuness, but really, lighten up people. I know if I was on vacation, the PC stays home. If it’s important, it’ll keep until I get home.

Sigh…. on second thought, maybe I shouldn’t dignify this with a response, but…

MDV posted while I was composing.

    AMEN!

    Tg
