the function of categories

  • In constructing my homepage, I’ve ignored Categories so far.

    Do they have a function aside from organizing posts by category? For instance, in the Help, I found this: “The Category Slug is used in the URL.”

    Does that mean that Category information is part of what gets picked up by search engines?

  • Categories are used by the WP sysytem. You have a Category called “donkeys” if you have alink to that category it will show allposts in that category.

    Search engines don’t care what category or tag you use. They read the content of the post.

    Categories are used for categorizing your posts.

    So, categories are just for the convenience of persons trying to navigate the site?
