• As a long time looker, first time user, I signed up to host my blog with Smartyhost.

The tech guys said I can’t run wordpresson my computer without Apache Server installed, I have to do it remotely on their servers.

So can I run WP on my computer and modify and then upload?

Is it easir to do this or do it through their server?

Do I have the same access?

https://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html – download and install xampp. This is absolutely the easiest way to run a server on your home machine for testing wp. Here’s a great tutorial on installing/using:

And it’s NOT a dumb question!

Do most users run wordpress from a remote server?

Strictly speaking, you need to have a webserver with PHP and MySQL to run WordPress. vkaryl is right – xampp is very easy. I use it on my USB flash drive and can start a webserver on pretty much any Windows based PC. This, however, is for development. I use it to modify plugins and themes to my tastes before actually uploading them to my web host.

To actually use WordPress so the world can see your blog, no you don’t need these things on your computer. You simply need a computer with a web browser. Your web host handles the rest. You’d simply upload the WordPress files, run the WordPress Install, and then begin blogging.

    Too easy!

Thanks for the help guys….now I just have to get it running on my lapdog

    Cheers

Hiya billh – long time no see! Yes, you’re right, those of us running xampp locally tend to use it for developing themes mostly, sometimes plugins.

shazzlicker, there are a lot of things you want to know up front before you consider running your own server that’s accessible from the ‘net. Like all the security stuff…. which is really why you’re paying for hosting – because THEY have to deal with the security stuff, you don’t. You get to post to your blog and have fun….
