• Hi everyone.

I’m aware of the new big issue with wordpress: the customizer is now mandatory so the theme options will no longer be authorized for new themes. The developers have six months to adapt their existing themes, otherwise updates will no longer be accepted.
Oh my God! Are you out of your mind, guys of the wordpress team?
I am shocked with the decision.
I am not a developer, but a webmaster and webdesigner. I worked with dozens of themes in my various sites. Most of the themes I use have theme options.
On my personal opinion, the customizer is not mature enough, is not complete enough. It is limited.
Why did you guys at wordpress took that kind of decision without listening to people? Have you listened the developers? Have you listened the users?
I am very unhappy with the decisions. Because the best themes out there use theme options instead of the limited customizer.
That is probably the worst decision wordpress took since I can rememeber. Please step back with your decision, or I am afraid you will open a pandora box of unhappy developers, unhappy users and one day a new kid in town may arise…

What are your feelings on this subject?

The theme Customizer is extendable and theme developers can add to it simply enough.

This is actually something that the Theme Review Team has been discussing for 3 years. Yes, the actual decision was recently made but it’s a good thing IMHO. Setting requirements for the theme repository and standards are good for the user experience and theme UI consistency.

By enforcing the use of the customizer:

    1. The users get a standard interface that is consistent (good UI)
    2. The developers get something that can be adopted and modified to their use.
    3. The customizer gets adopted and extended (yes, that is part of the goal).

I am very unhappy with the decisions. Because the best themes out there use theme options instead of the limited customizer.

If the developer put those options in the customizer and released a new version of their theme to comply with this new requirement, would users stop using that theme?

The TRT is very inclusive and encourages participation. Anyone can get started and reviewing themes is a really good way to learn and get involved. Theme developers should at a minimum subscribe to the make/themes blog.

Like the support team, they have an active Slack channel too.

I’m not on that team (they work hard!) but I know this decision was not made capriciously. And after years of discussion, making that decision was like stepping over the threshold of a doorway. It was a small step and theme authors/users should be aware of all the steps it took to get there. ??

The key thing to remember is that this:

the customizer is now mandatory so the theme options will no longer be authorized for new themes.

Applies to themes hosted on www.remarpro.com only.

Anyone can get started and reviewing themes is a really good way to learn and get involved. Theme developers should at a minimum subscribe to the make/themes blog.

Yes. Anybody is welcome and I personally encourage people to do even one theme review to get an understanding of how themes are built ??

On my personal opinion, the customizer is not mature enough, is not complete enough. It is limited.

I’d be happy to hear what limitations you believe the customizer currently has. I’m sure the core customizer team would love to hear any legit issues as well.
