    Hi @knutsp,

To attach a comment to a block, select a block and use the “comment” icon from the toolbar to add a comment.

I will be working on the UI so you will eventually be able to do this directly from the toolbar.

Sorry to hear that translations are not working, I will add an issue and investigate this as a priority.

    Also @knutsp,

An update is being released this weekend that highlights the comment that relates to a block when the block is selected, so this may make it more apparent that a comment is attached to a block.

    This should be out tomorrow.

    Hope this helps.

As it is now there is no way to tell what block a comment is added to.
When the toolbar comment icon is clicked, having a specific block in focus, all earlier comments, regardless of block, is shown in the sidebar.

If comments are really to be connected to a block, never at document level, then only current block comments must be shown, or better, only comments for current block and its ancestors (outwards for nested blocks).

    Hi @knutsp,

    Thank you for the feedback.

I will be releasing a fix for comment highlighting this weekend. I look forward to seeing if this solves the problem for you.

    Hi @knutsp,

Here is a gif of the UI improvements that I will be rolling out tomorrow (attached to the tweet): https://twitter.com/wholesomecode/status/1277014571392344065?s=20

Hopefully this makes it more obvious which comment relates to which block.

Version 1.2.0 is now rolled out with a better UI for comment selection. Also I’ve added wp_set_script_translations to allow block editor JS translations to be picked up.

Let me know if you have any further issues.

Thank you for the update. Comments belonging to the current block are now focused, other blurred. I can’t see the reason for showing comments to other blocks, except when document is selected.

I have some paragraph blocks nested inside other (non core) blocks. The comment icon show, but nothing happens when clicked.

Should comments work for nested blocks, inside core containers or others? If not, the icon is confusing.

Should comments work for non core blocks? Same as above.

    Translations now work!

    Hi @knutsp

I’m pleased the translations now work. I appreciate your contribution.

The other blocks show when a block is selected, albeit with a reduced opacity so that they can be selected and brought into focus.

When you click on a comment it selects the related block, so you can navigate just the comments if you wish to, and see the context.

With regards to the nested block UI this does need some work, and eventually I will implement a Google docs style interface.

Thank you for your feedback so far, I may add an option in the settings to only view the selected block comment. For this I could use the blocks inspector control instead of the sidebar.

    Hi @knutsp,

Just an FYI I have released v1.2.1 which fixes the innerBlocks issue. You can now add comments to sub blocks.

    Nice improvement!

May I suggest that showing all comments in a document is a function (something to select), and a per user setting/option to make this the default.

IMHO, the initial default should be not to show all, for minimal confusion (analog to public comments to posts, you don’t see all the site’s comments unless viewing a comments feed). But a comment count could also be a way to discover them.

You currently have a “Comments” heading (and as menu item under Tools & Options – Plugins), and below that another “Comments” subheading. Not ideal.

It could be “Block Commenting”, then “Preferences”, “Comments (List)”.

Anyway, this is starting to something I will use and recommend!

Thanks @knutsp I’ll add those recommendations to the roadmap and I will start to introduce them.
