• Hi, I’m upgrading from WP 2.3 to WP 2.7 and when recreating my categories, I get this error message: The category you are trying to create already exists.

All the professional blogs I created for my clients are running on WP and their category structures are all the same, like:

    Spain
    – Projects
    – Photos

    United States
    – Projects
    – Photos

    And so on…

So this is a BIG BIG problem I can’t create the needed categories. I need a Project child category for the Spain parent category, and also a Project child category for the United State parent category, and so on.

Is that a bug in WP 2.7? Because I can’t see any good reason to not allow to create same name child categories for different parent category. It’s the basis of a blog to be able the create whatever category needed.

I hope it will be corrected as soon as possible, it’s being a big issue for many other people I know upgrading to WP 2.7. Meanwhile, any suggestion for a solution is welcome ??

No, it’s limitation of the WordPress category system.

What happens if you create a category named US Projects (giving it a slug of us-projects) and then go back later and change the category name only (not the slug) to Projects?

Thanks a lot iridiax, it seems to work! But it’s going to be a tedious work to do for every blog… ??

I chose to manually recreate the categories but I wonder what will happen if I import the existing categories I already created… Any idea before I take the risk?

But I still don’t understand why they decided to put such a limitation on the category system. WP 2.7 is so, so great (espcially the UI) I don’t get why they took this decision. All they had to do is to automatically give a different slug for same category name. Weird.

It must just be the category slugs that need to be different.

I wonder what will happen if I import the existing categories I already created.

I’d guess that it would fail if the categories have the same slugs.

Yup, I’ll have to give different slug to every single same child categories… Tedious work like I said. Thanks again iridiax.

WP Dev Team, if you read this post by any luck, please hear my complain and do something to better category management in WP 2.8. You did a really amazing work, so if you can do something about that huge problem, WP would be absolutely perfect! ??
