I also have been looking all over the net trying all kinds of plugins and hacks to get this to work. I’ve come the closest with yours so far. When I activated it and updated all users, that worked. When a register a new user and login, and then go to my profile and update it, that works as well. I am also using the User Profiles Made Easy Widget and if I register and then edit the profile through that it doesn’t update it.

However, when new users just register it still displays the username.

See for yourself. (the last registered user shows the username, not the actual name)
