I did see a previous issue about not knowing how to get rid of this message.

I think it would be better to have a “Dismiss” or big X button to close the message.

However, my issue with this message is not that it cannot be closed, nor the fact that it does not say how to get rid of it.

It is more to me that this seems to me to be an advertising nag message. I use many plugins over the years and as far as I can recall, this is the first marketing/nag message I have seen.

I would ask that you please consider not using these types of messages.

If other plugins started to do the same thing, our admin screens would be full of them.

I totally agree. Please do not add this type of ads to this otherwise awesome plugin. These ads are a reason why we stop using some plugins in the long run and we have this plugin running on maybe 20 sites. There are plenty of alternatives available, but his has been our favourite for a long time. You can put the ads the plugins own admin screen, if you really want to show them.

If you choose not to remove the nag, please
    1) Add a dismiss button.
    2) Show the nag only on one pageload.

I’ve been a fan of dFactory plugins for a long time and I really hope this nag thing is just a one time slip.

    Thx for the feedback,

If you click the link in the notice it will be dismissed and you should never get it again.

But we’re not the fans of that kind of marketing and the fact that other plugins are being much more agressive in this might not be enough reason to do the same.

We’ll try to make the notice easilly dismissable in the next release (for those who did not get it yet).

Your plugin is the FIRST plugin that I have seen use this type of messaging in the locations it show up on.

So under GPL you can place a message, however people can also
    1) fork your plugin
    2) find alternatives
    3) write code/plugin to prevent your messages
    4) provide reviews that take these messages into account

The first plugin with that kind of marketing, really?

Yoast SEO, Woocommerce, EDD, WP Slimstat, W3 Total Cache… to name a few only from the popular ones.

I’m aware of what people can do, and somethimes do, like:
    – create a 100% copy of our Events Maker and put into repository under different name,
    – post a review that makes you think about stopping the whole WP work you’re doing for the community
    – reuqest fixing paid themes, to make them work with a free plugin
    – and so on.

So there’s no point to argue I think. The whole problem is, the lack of a dismiss icon in current release (though it can be dismissed in 2 ways already).

Well as you say let’s not argue.

    Let’s agree to disagree.

I recognize your view of what the problem is, even if I dont agree:

The whole problem is, the lack of a dismiss icon in current release (though it can be dismissed in 2 ways already).

Please recognize my view of the problem even if you don’t agree:

It is the placement of the message in numerous admin screens, not just the admin screen of the plugin. To me it does not make any difference whether it has a dismiss button.

Being a plugin developer is a thankless job. People want to use your code free of charge, they want it to be perfect, and they get annoyed pretty easily when you place ads or other messages. “How dare you put dirt on my admin” they will admonish you. And yet, like everyone else, plugin developers need to bring food to the table at night. And spend countless hours perfecting their code, because the spirit of open source guides them. But nobody thanks them for that. Oh well…

But we’re still doing it, don’t we?

I love your work by the way @camu, keep it up!

Even though you put some notices i have to remove for clients with display: none… ??

I do agree that being a plugin developer is a thankless job, IF you are expecting to make money from it.

If you are providing plugins to the community simply because you want to contribute, then being a plugin developer can be rewarding because you are making a difference, helping people and being appreciated.

I help out in other ways so I can see what you mean, but I don’t expect to make money and I think it is important to give back and I do get a sense of satisfaction from that.

People are lucky to have developers develop code that can benefit them in many ways.

I think it is great when a developer provide plugin(s) for the community to use.

But because these plugins are 1) Open-source 2) GPL 3) Free 4) Usually have other free alternatives, I do not think it is wise to expect or depend on making money from writing free, open source plugins.

If you look at the great basic building blocks of a WordPress site – UNIX OS, Apache server software, MySQL database, WordPress core, they all do not have popup advertising and have figured out other business models that make money for them and allows them to provide, maintain, develop and support their free software.

It is always amusing when people compare a one-person show with big projects funded by Universities and other corporations ??

    Thread Starter wpfan1000

    (@wpfan1000)

Nonetheless, they have a business model that allows them to make money without having advertising popups, and that is a business model that a one person show can use as well.

Their business model is often called academic research ?? Most of the products you mentioned were born as a research project funded by a higher education institution. I’d love to have my employer pay me to develop my plugin, but that is usually the exception, not the rule. Which means that most developers need to resort to other means and avenues to monetize their work. Which is not against any of the rules of GPL, so I still fail to see what this big fuss is all about ?? You all mention GPL, open source and the likes, but then you apply those concepts only when it’s convenient to support your thinking. Rules work both ways, my friends.

Ok, if you guys can’t understand that people don’t want their admin screens flooded with intrusive advertising, that is fine.

Go ahead, try it, see what happens, good luck.
