TEXTAREA Field Stripping new lines/spacing or enter/return

We have a couple of large textarea fields on our form that are used for people to enter their volunteer hours. We have users who copy/paste data in or enter each volunteer activity on a different line. When filling out the form it shows the data on different lines; however, once the form is submitted it strips all the new line formatting out which makes it difficult for our coordinator to record the hours since all the text is no longer formatted as it was entered.

Is there any way for us to set the the field for it to keep the formatting when entered?

Have tried using multiple browsers — safari, google, and firefox — but formatting appears to be stripped with all mentioned browsers.
