Hi there – hope someone can help. I’ve been using WordPress for many years su ccessfully, but am not a developer or techy. The version and plug-ins are up to date.

The problem is trying to apply a URL to text to show a PDF file. The URL box will not accept it, or immediately applies the link but the link is invalid, giving a Error 404. I know what to do, but the software isn’t behaving in the way I’d expect. Looking at old forums, other users experienced the same.

    What am I doing wrong??

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

By the way, the links in that page DO work, but each link took 15 or 20 mins to be made to work! Help!

Does the link to the pdf work now (after your update I mean)?

What do you mean when you say “made to work”, did you have to manually “fix” them, or do mean your browser sits their for 15 – 20 mins before “following” the link. Could you provide a front end link to the page so I can look at it without having to create an account on the site?

I’ll try to help, if you could answer those questions it would be great!

I assume you are talking about this page. There you can see a list of downloads, all of which are linked and accessible. What exactly is causing your problem? You still seem to be using the Classic Editor and I assume you are trying to set a link via this?

    Hi, @johnpeal1

I went to the page @threadi mentioned and all seems to working on my end. Might be your browser?

@luxxston77, in answer to your questions..

    1. Yes, I had to try for 15 to 20 mins each time I wanted to add the link, as the software wasn’t behaving as I know it should. The media was uploaded fine, it was just the process of creating the link in the back end was repeatedly failing.
    2. No, it wasn’t just waiting for the change to appear.
    3. Here is the front end link you requested: https://yellingvillage.co.uk/parish-council/meeting-minutes/
    4. Thanksfor any help you can offer!

@threadi, yes, I think I am using the Classic editor. Specifically, what happens is this: when I paste the URL of the media (a PDF document) into the box, it clicks away – I can’t see the URL and don’t get the chance to ‘Apply’ the link. In the editor, it shows as a link, I then click Update. Then when I check via the front end, the link is visible, but goes to an Error 404 page. Why? I created the link, the media is in the library, I copied the URL correctly and in full…?

Unfortunately, I can’t reproduce this for myself. The following procedure:
    I open the Classic Editor.
I select a text that I want to link.
I click on the link icon above it.
    Then this window appears:

    View post on imgur.com

I then insert any URL to a PDF.
Then I click on the enter arrow – done. The link is set and is also saved.

Apart from the Classic Editor, I have not activated any other plugins. Could you rule out other plugins as the cause for this? Deactivate them completely as a test.

I found some posts online, basically troubleshoot the plugins, theme, etc. like @threadi suggests, here are the links:

tell me how it goes ??

Hi gents – many thanks to you both for your assistance – it is now working, and it was user error, of course! Cheers, John

    Glad you got it working!
