Text Limit on Categories and Homepage

Hi there,

I’d like to have a post limit on my blog posts (homepage and category archives). I’m using a child theme of twentythirteen.

What’s the correct and best way to do this? I’m comfortable with editing php, I’m just not sure which file to modify and where.
