Text field – Date validation

The Pro version just launched with an easy way to customize the date format. Hasn’t made it to the free version yet.

Does that apply to the date validation of a Text field as well as the date picker?

No, that’s managed through the jQuery Validation plugin. Which should allow all kinds of formats. See the docs for more info on it.
