Text color and links

I’m using the new Vigilance theme and have hit a problem which its developer says is attributable to WordPress rather than Vigilance. I’m using a MacBook Pro and Safari (version 4) as my browser.

When I highlight words in the body text and select a different color for them, they don’t change (either in editing mode or when I view my blog).

Second, when I try to set up a text link to a URL by highlighting a word and then clicking on the link icon, a dialogue box appears with insert/edit link options but it and the entire dashboard area are grayed out and the screen freezes: nothing responds to a mouse click, so I have to click on the back button to get out of the page and abandon the attempt.

Any suggestions about what might be wrong?
