Text attributes (strong, em, etc) being ignored

I recently changed the theme of my WP blog, and now my text attributes such as <strong> and <em> and <cite> are all displaying as regular text in all browsers. The text displays as expected in the editor. The tags are still there and show up in the page source. I checked the css and couldn’t find anything that would alter these standard attributes. Where else should I be looking?
