Text Alerts in a WordPress Site

I am looking for a plug in or way that will allow people to get text alerts from a WordPress site. It cannot just send out texts for every update. The site specifically is based on having local teams and I want to allow visitors to select favorite teams and only get alerts on updates only related to their favorites.

Anyone familiar with a plug in that can do this? I did some searches and seemed to only find ones that do updates for every update.
