testing for an image browse destination page

I’m using NextGen gallery. When a thumbnail is clicked I want the destination (image browse) page to detect, just after the header, that an image is being displayed (and do some conditional work). I’ve thought of testing for a ‘pid’ in the URL but I feel uneasy about this.

Any code ideas would be gratefully received.
