• Hello to everybody!

    I am a beginner WordPress user, I would like to ask, what kind of plugins and systems do you use for safely managing your site backups, both files and databases?

    I have tried a couple of free plugins, currently what I use is BackWpUp. Right now it makes database backups and sends them to my gmail email, and I log in manually through ftp to my site and I am manually downloading and deleting the backup files it makes, because my host does not allow to store too much backup files on their server.

    So I am curious, what kind of plugins do you use and trust with your site, along with what kind of system do you use for storing your files? Under system, I mean, where do you store them, how often do you copy and/or delete the files, how often do you make backups, and so on…

    I have some questions too I would like to ask:
    * Would it be a good idea to sign up to a separate gmail/google drive account for storing my backup files there?
    * Are the plugins which can automatically upload the backup files to google drive, dropbox, etc, safe in terms of, if a site gets hacked, I suppose hackers would be able to reach my files on Google Drive and delete those also, right?

    Right now sadly I am not in a position to give out money for premium plugins, so if you could please give me tips which does not cost money, that would be really great!

    This is a nice plugin that will backup your site (files + db) and push the backup to your Dropbox account.

    Regular backups are an excellent best practice – so pat yourself on the back! Many of the catastrophic problems on this forum could be easily fixed if only the user had a recent backup to restore. Re. plugins – try some out, pick one that works well for you – and practice restoring a test site. Re. cloud storage – good choice, I would not worry about hackers searching out and killing backup copies across the Internet – seems far fetched. Re. frequency – depends on how often your site changes. For my relatively static sites monthly is plenty. I keep three copies of each backup in different locations – on the site, local drive, usb stick.

    Yes. You can specify the off-site location in BackWpUp; then you don’t have to worry about storage on your host. You can also specify how many backup copies to keep and it will automatically delete the old copies.

    Maybe but, as @acstudent noted, this isn’t normally something hackers are interested in or would want to take the time to do. If you’re concerned about it you could always download a backup file from your off-site storage to your computer.

    Regarding hackers deleting my backups on Google Drive or other cloud storage, I was thinking, since the backup app has access rights in order to upload the backups, maybe hackers could easily get their hands on that access rights too ??

    I would like to ask, when you set up backups for the files, do you backup all the files in one go, or you backup the wp-content or the uploads folder separately and more frequently? And in your oppinion, is it necessary to backup WordPress core files, or that can be left out?

    Depends on what you’re trying to accomplish. The worst-case scenario is that your site is completely trashed/gone/whatever. Can you start with a new install of WP and then restore only the parts you have backed up, hoping you got everything you need? Personally I prefer to make a complete site backup; WP files, site files, database, everything. Then, if I need to restore the entire site, I already have it. If I need to restore just the theme, or a plugin, or the database, I can select those from the full backup as well. How often to back up? I run a backup every night, whether or not anything has changed on the site. If I’m making changes to the site I usually run a manual backup before I make the changes and after.

    I experimented a bit with UpdraftPlus, I liked the idea that it can upload the files to Google Drive, so I don’t have to watch out how much space do my backup files take up on my shared hosting… However I hate that it can only make backups separately… I mean, backups, plugins, themes, etc… + Database
    That is not what I would like in an ideal solution, since it completely leaves out the core WordPress files, so I cannot do as @bdbrown does ?? Any advice on what to use?

    Also I don’t like that it won’t send the database backups over email if I set it up to upload to Google Drive… ??

    Updraft uses a different philosophy. They assume that you’ll install a new version of WP and then restore the backup. BackWPup will grab everything, if you select that option, and will backup to external storage and send the backup via email all in the same job. It just doesn’t have an option for Google Drive (unless you purchase the Pro version).
